What Are Peptides?

Before working with lyophilized peptides, it is important to understand peptide reconstitution. This step can be confusing because it involves measurements, concentration, and unit conversions. A peptide dosage calculator helps make this process easier by estimating the draw volume based on the information you enter.
How the Peptide Calculator Works
The calculator first determines the concentration of the solution.
For example, 1 mg of peptide is equal to 1,000 mcg. If 1,000 mcg of peptide is dissolved in 2 mL of bacteriostatic water, the concentration is calculated like this:
Concentration = Total peptide amount ÷ Total solution volume
1,000 mcg ÷ 2 mL = 500 mcg/mL
This means each milliliter of solution contains 500 mcg of peptide.
The calculator then determines how much solution is needed for the desired dose. For example, if the desired dose is 250 mcg:
Required volume = Desired dose ÷ Concentration
250 mcg ÷ 500 mcg/mL = 0.5 mL
In this example, 0.5 mL of solution contains 250 mcg of peptide.

Bacteriostatic Water vs. Sterile Water
Bacteriostatic water and sterile water are both used to dissolve certain medications or compounds for injection. However, they are not the same.
Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which helps prevent bacterial growth. This allows the vial to be used for multiple withdrawals over a limited period when handled properly. According to prescribing information for Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, the product is intended for diluting or dissolving drugs for injection and contains benzyl alcohol as a preservative.
Sterile water does not contain preservatives. Once opened, it should generally be used immediately because it does not have the same protection against bacterial growth.
Bacteriostatic water is commonly used in peptide reconstitution, but it is not appropriate for every person, compound, or route of administration. It should not be used in neonates, pregnant women, certain medications, or for intrathecal injection. Always follow medical guidance and product-specific instructions.
How to Store Peptides
Peptides should be stored in a cool, dry, dark place. For best preservation, many peptides should be stored at 4°C or colder and kept away from bright light.
Dry peptides may remain stable at room temperature for short periods, but long-term storage usually requires colder conditions, often around -20°C depending on the peptide and supplier instructions.
Moisture can reduce peptide stability. Before opening a cold vial, allow it to warm to room temperature to help prevent condensation from forming inside the vial.
Once opened, the vial should be resealed properly and returned to cold storage. Peptides should be stored in clean, chemically inert containers. Glass and polypropylene vials are commonly used, though glass may be preferred when better visibility is needed.
Peptides in solution may bind to container surfaces, especially at low concentrations. This can reduce the amount of usable peptide in the solution and affect results. High-quality glass or polypropylene vials can help reduce this issue.
Peptide solutions generally have a shorter shelf life than dry peptides. Peptides containing cysteine, methionine, asparagine, glutamine, or tryptophan may be especially sensitive. To extend stability, peptide solutions are often stored in sterile buffers with a pH around 5–6 and kept at -20°C or colder when appropriate.
Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles, as they can degrade peptides. Frost-free freezers are also not ideal because their automatic defrost cycles cause temperature fluctuations.
